It is always the female mosquito that bites us in order to suck our blood to nourish her developing eggs. They find their targets with visual, heat and some chemical sensors. If your body is warmer than others, if you emit more carbon dioxide and if you have moisture on your body then the mosquitoes are sure to find you. They have special sensory organs that sense the CO2 released and spot the location of their victims.
Research has shown that mosquitoes get attracted to dark colours. So if you are wearing dark coloured clothing, then you can fall prey to their bites. We humans also release lactic acid due to the consumption of certain types of food. Also when we exercise our body releases lactic acid, which attracts mosquitoes.
How do mosquito repellents work?
Mosquito repellents do not actually kill the mosquitoes, they are meant to merely repel them. Repellents use several chemicals and have a pungent smell. When we spray mosquito repellents, the pungent smell from the repellents cover the carbon dioxide and lactic acid released by our bodies and when mosquitoes do not get the smell they fly away as they lose focus of the target.
